Popular local 2.0 company Yelp officially launches local search service in UK

Popular local search service Yelp has launched in the United Kingdom.  The launch will allow UK searchers to read and write reviews about local businesses and share opinions with the Yelp community.

Yelp?s co-founder and chief executive officer Jeremy Stoppelman comments, ?London is the heart of the English speaking world and one of the world?s great cities.  For the past three years, Londoners have been asking us to bring Yelp to the UK and we?re excited to have finally taken this step.  We are committed to making Yelp London as vibrant and useful as Yelp in San Francisco or New York.?

UK small businesses will be able create their own profiles in order to engage with potential and new customers and peers.  Yelp are confident of the success of the UK version with their affirmation that over 100,000 UK visitors have visited Yelp.com in the past month.

?Yelp has been a leader in the developments that might together be called ?local 2.0?.  It helped reinvent the local segment by making community a more central part of the experience,? comments Greg Sterling, analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence.

Yelp UK will compete with established local search and business directories in the UK such as Yell, BT Trading Spaces and Bview.
