Refugee Week ? 16-22 June 2008
To mark Refugee Week 2008, the British Red Cross is launching a
UK-wide social networking campaign supported by actor Dougray Scott.
The campaign will give young refugees and asylum seekers like Charles a
platform to tell their story through video diaries, which will be
showcased through sites such as Facebook, Bebo and YouTube, as well as
the British Red Cross
Refugee Week website.
Refugee Week (16 ? 22 June 2008) celebrates the positive contribution refugees make to life in the UK.
The week features a programme of cultural and educational events across the country, to encourage greater understanding between communities. It is also a chance for charities like the British Red Cross to promote the work they do with refugees and explore the issues involved.
Young refugees speak upDuring this year?s Refugee Week, the Red Cross is focusing on children and young people who flee their countries and seek safety in the UK.
Young asylum seekers and refugees are particularly vulnerable ? even more so when they arrive in this country alone, with no friends or family to protect them.
There are many reasons why young people leave their homes to make the long, and often dangerous, journey to the UK. Their parents might have been killed or detained. They might face being forcibly recruited into armed groups, or be persecuted because of their race, religion or political beliefs.
Despite going through traumatic experiences, many young refugees come to the UK determined to build a better life and actively contribute to the country that gave them sanctuary.
From learning how to save a life, to helping others in the same situation, young refugees tell their stories in a
series of video diaries, produced especially for Refugee Week 2008.
