MySpace have today launched a new celebrity channel, aptly named
MySpace Celebrity.
The new channel will focus heavily on content, particularly celebrity news, blogs, videos, photographs and event details. MySpace currently hosts in addition of 300 official celebrity profiles, and these will be indexed on what MySpace are
dubbing "Hollywood's new homepage."
President and founder of MySpace
Tom Anderson, a fimilar face to the sites users, comments, "Celebrities have been using MySpace since the site?s launch and it?s a natural extension for us to now offer them an aggregated channel where they can be in control of their own image. We want MySpace users to connect with celebrities in the same way that they do with musicians.?
MySpace have partnered with Getty Images to provide the newest celebrity photographs to the channel on a daily basis, and
People.com for breaking celebrity news.
MySpace Celebrity will provide fans with the opportunity to become "friends" with celebrities, send messages, post comments to profile pages and share celebrity videos with the rest of the celebrity-groupie community.
Star of Scrubs
Zach Braff tells of his fondness for MySpace. "MySpace is a revolutionary way for people who create things to have a dialogue with an audience who may like (or sometimes dislike) what you've created. It's kind of like the world's largest ongoing conversation."
MySpace have been making a concerted effort recently to change the perception that they are a music and teen orientated community - particularly as their biggest competition Facebook continues to gain ground. Recently, MySpace have
announced development plans that will help them appeal more to the business networking community, with the introduction of segmented groups and Facebook styled news feeds.
At the dawn of 2008, MySpace held a '
Presidential Primary' that was held on the MySpace
Impact Channel and in
October 2007 they partnered with free VoIP service Skype to provide calls to MySpace users at no cost.
