Planned Parenthood Los Angeles launch e-condom gift giving application on Facebook

Planned Parenthood, a non-profit organisation in Los Angeles, has announced a Facebook campaign to promote safe sex during the US? national Condom Week and Valentine?s Day.

The ?You?re Protected? campaign allows Facebook users to give a virtual condom (or e-condom) to their friends through a gift application on the popular social utility.  Facebook users can send the virtual condoms in a range of colours and sizes, with new varieties being ?unlocked? with the more e-condoms sent.

?Valentine?s Day is a great time of year to love carefully in any environment and raise awareness of condom use.  Our e-condom gifts are a fun and interactive way for those online to send the message: ?No glove? No Love!?? comments Planned Parenthood LA?s vice president, Sue Dunlap.

The campaign also hopes to promote the availability of Planned Parenthood?s real life condom range, ?Proper Attire: Required for entry®? which the Facebook range has been modelled on; plain, coloured, studded and extra large.

Since launching the ?You?re Protected? application on Facebook had just 40 application users.  Comments from ?fans? of the campaign said, ?Thank you!, and keep up the good work,? ?This is hilarious. Where are the XL? :-)? ?c'mon y'all, get dressed for the party!!!!? and ?This is SO fun!?

Planned Parenthood explain the motives behind the campaign: ?Condoms used consistently and correctly provide the best protection against sexually transmitted infections for sexually active women and men. They also protect against unintended pregnancy. Research shows that every year there are more than three million unintended pregnancies, and approximately 19 million women and men will contract a sexually transmitted infection.?
