Detractors of ITVs hit show The X Factor have started an online protest on social networking site Facebook to make this years eccentric contestant Wagner the winner.

At the time of writing, more than 70 separate Facebook Pages had been set up to support Brazilian contestant Wagner Carrilho winning X Factor 2010.  All groups as a collective have more than 30,000 members and growing steadily, however as one fan said, ??All the Wagner support pages on FB need to join forces somehow to get his fans in the one place and enable his support to really snowball.?

The ?Team Wagner? camp seems to be slip into two parts.  Those that find the singer entertaining and enjoy his performances and those that want to rebel against the ?Simon Cowell machine?, with comments such as:

  • ?Xmas number one is yours Man! Lets do it!! =)?
  • ?you are the coolest man in the world right now and i am going 2 vote and support u until u wipe everyone's asses on the xfactor and win the competition?
  • ?Please invite all of your friends, let's wipe that smug look off Simon Cowell's face this Christmas?
  • ?How can cheryl Cole get away with miming on a show that is about live singing!!! Hang on! she is mentoring and critisizing people for dropping notes etc!!! this show is a sham and we should make sure wagner wins to show it up for what it is!!!!!!!?
  • ?X FACTOR IS A FIX AND ALL ABOUT PUBLICITY, VOTE FOR WAGNER AND CAUSE MAYHEM, IF CHER WINS WE RIOT?

Between 2005 and 2008, the Christmas number one has all been from X Factor winners; Shane Ward, Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson and Alexandra Burke respectively.  2009?s winner Joe McElderry was pipped to the number one post by Rage Against the Machine as a result of a Facebook campaign to prevent another X Factor winner at the top of the chart.

At the time, Rage Against the Machine bandmate Zack de la Rocha said, ?We are very, very ecstatic about being number one.  It was an incredible organic grassroots campaign.?  Joe McElderry commented he did not believe the campaign was a personal attack, ?It?s more about the show than me and I think if any other person had have won, the same thing would have happened, because the petition was going on before the winner had been announced.?  The campaign even earned congratulations from Simon Cowell.

It is widely accepted that Brazilian Wagner is this year?s ?random? contestant, and if the 100/1 goes on to win 2010?s X Factor thanks to Facebook users, what will that say for the competition and in fact of its creator Simon Cowell?

One Wagner backer comments, ?Let?s face it, he is not gonna win on talent.  He is being brought on as the humorous character.  But we need to show Simon and Co. who the judges really are? us.?

Can Facebook deliver the Christmas number one two years in a row?
