Lieutenant Colonel (ret?d) Andrew Morton, Director of Social Engagement, will be will be co-chairing the conference together with Mr Steven Mehringer, Head of Communications Services at NATO.

He will also be hosting a post-conference workshop entitled ?Building Social Teams, Content & Communities? on 16 November, which explores key drivers in creating engaged online communities through strategic and sustainable social media activity.

In the run-up to the event, SMi Group spoke to Lt. Col Morton about the challenges in association to utilising social media within the defence industry. ?A big challenge for social media is to balance propriety and security with the social mission. It's a balancing act; the defense sector is constrained by these considerations but the breadth of meaningful content outpaces those concerns. Training is key.?

When asked about how he envisions the future of social media within the defence industry, he responded, "Social media has and will continue to be a vehicle for the most real and relevant stories. Additionally, it can be a means by which military personnel can effectively manage their career development - including transition."
