Global events production company SMi Group has launched a Twitter competition to explore social media integration in military activities.
In the run up to the
6th Social Media within the Defence & Military Sector event, SMi Group co-hosted a series of Twitter live chats together with SHRM, SHAPE NATO and Saab.
The interactive discussions saw social media and marketing practitioners from the defence industry exploring the benefits and the future of social media within military activities. A few key example campaigns include:
- Social Media has provided a platform to engage in professional debates with the global military network. With social media becoming an open source intelligence asset, NATO, Bundeswehr and the US Department of Defense are set to discuss social media in conjunction with other information warfare systems this November at the conference.
- SHAPE NATO has global operations over varying time zones, but social media has allowed great flexibility and reach. At the same time, the UK MoD has also maintained a wide reach over a valid audience with reduced costs.
- During Exercise Cold Response, the Norwegian Armed Forces have raised their profile by integrating social media into military engagements amongst the population. Likewise, Saab has managed to get everyone talking about the new Gripen E with a "hashtag". They had their stories to tell, and they knew who wanted to listen.
- The US Department of Defense has recently launched programmes to educate warfighters in developing online security. Training and awareness ensures what your troops post online does not impact operational security.
- The UK Army, Irish Defence Forces and Canadian Forces have all successfully recruited new troops by using new platforms such as Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram. They say future recruitment drives will be shaped by digital content because it's relatable to the millennial generation.
- With the newest generation of soldiers having grown up with social media, senior military leaders including the US Army and the Italian Army have embraced new means of digital communication to engage and learn how to lead all of their troops.
Against this backdrop, SMi Group?s competition encourages participants to share examples of their experiences and thoughts about social media within the military and defence industry on Twitter by using the hashtag
#milsocialmedia in their tweets. One chosen winner will get a £200 voucher off the conference price. The competition ends on the 30th of October and the winner will be announced on the 31st via Twitter.

6th Social Media within the Defence & Military Sector will take place on 14 & 15 November 2016 in London and will feature presentations from Facebook, Thales, Saab, NATO, UK MoD, US Department of Defense, Norwegian Armed Forces, Saab, United Nations, Bundeswehr, Czech Republic MoD, Canadian National Defense and many more.
